Expanding the IoT into the Utility – Simply

The Internet of Things (IoT) has been a tremendous enabler for many industries. One example, the auto industry with the connected car; it has created improved value for both the vehicle owner and the vehicle manufacturer by enabling many new applications that improve overall vehicle operation and most importantly customer satisfaction.

Utilities have also embraced the IoT with applications like demand side management, Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), Distribution Automation, and more. Most of these IoT applications connect traditional grid assets and are associated with the direct delivery of energy. But utilities own and operate many other assets not directly delivering energy but just as critical to the safe and reliable delivery of energy including, power poles, weather stations, environmental sensors, underground facilities, and more.

So why aren’t these other indirect assets connected? There are many reasons why, but it can simply be boiled down to: the IoT can be hard. To bring about a new IoT application you need a lot of expertise: hardware, embedded software, security, connectivity, etc., in addition, pricing models for connecting these assets can be complex and expensive, if not done properly.

Watch this webinar and discover how Sierra Wireless Octave™ combined with Losant’s IoT Enterprise platform can be used to simplify the building of IoT applications for utilities.

In this webinar, we explore:

  • Real-life uses cases
  • Recommendations for getting started
